Your reasonsing about the spine bleeding onto the front and back covers makes sense.

I use a template for my DVD covers, which has the spine outlined, and then when I finish the cover I "hide" the layer with the guidelines on it so there's no white pixels fucking with the look of the cover. I've attached the PSD template I use below.The spine thing, yes its 55 pixels wide, I just chose to let it connect the front and back by the black, because in the past I printed covers and the spine was almost on front while it should be where it should be, so its to give it some margin so to say
