That is what I do, unless I know for sure that the design that my customer wants to have is easy enough to make a template from scratch for.

problems i come across are: when i remove top modules it says "top module empty"; another one is that i dont want my page look in a4 format heh, i want the body extended to 100%

Most templates are loaded up with PHP If statements. If you can follow that logic you will most likely be all set. Yes, some PHP scripting knowledge is needed, but it is not tough.
Check out my latest Joomla site, still in development... http://www.nhcustomcable.com/joomla/
In there you can see how the page width of the main body content changes from page to page (ie some pages have a left column that shows, some pages have a right column that shows and some pages are a full width).

Most likely the reason why you see "top module empty" is because the template you are using has some code in it that is something like this...problems i come across are: when i remove top modules it says "top module empty";
If topmodule is empty then write "top module empty" else show topmodule
Something like that is making the "top module empty" text show.

Thanks. My customer wanted something professional, plain, clear and clean. The template is so simple that I created it from scratch, without having to use another template as a guide.btw, very good site, very clean, like the nav :sarcastic_hand:
Some other Joomla-driven websites that I did for my customers include...
http://www.melodiouscreations.com
http://www.laundrylist.org
http://joomla.siteventures.com (still in development)
http://www.nhtroubadour.com/joomla/ (still in development, custom template coming soon this week)
